Catholics climax maiden Provincial Rosary Congress in Tamale

Thousands of Catholic faithful have climaxed the maiden Provincial Rosary Congress in Tamale with a Mass and prayers for the wellbeing of all people.

The three-day Rosary Congress, held on the theme: “The Holy Rosary: A Path to Jubilee Grace”, was organised by the Catholic Archdiocese of Tamale in collaboration with the Global Rosary Network.

It was attended by the faithful from across the northern part of the country, namely, the Tamale Archdiocese, Navrongo-Bolgatanga, Wa, Damongo and Yendi Dioceses.

The Congress featured a solemn procession with the Blessed Sacrament and the Statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary from Our Lady of Annunciation (OLA) Cathedral, Tamale through the Holy Door to the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, accompanied by the praying of the Holy Rosary and Marian hymns.

The Climax Mass was presided by the Most Reverend Philip Naameh, Metropolitan Archbishop of Tamale, and co-celebrated by Most Reverend Peter Paul Angkyier, Bishop of Damongo, Most Reverend Matthew Yitiereh, Bishop of Yendi, and Most Reverend Francis Bomansaan, Bishop of Wa, and more than 60 priests.

The Rosary Congress marked a milestone in the Church’s mission to deepen Marian devotion, promote unity among the dioceses, seek the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary for peace in towns affected by conflicts such as Bawku and Gbinyiri.

Prayers were also said for President John Dramani Mahama, the Government, and the people of Ghana as part of the activities of the Jubilee Year of Hope (2025), declared by the late Pope Francis.

Most Rev Naameh, in a sermon, expressed gratitude to God for the success of the Congress and the spiritual transformation it inspired amongst Catholics.

He said: “We began this journey on Thursday with hope and expectation. Today, as we bring it to a close, we can only say Glory be to God. Everything has gone beautifully, and we have truly felt the presence of the Holy Spirit amongst us.”

He commended Rev Father David Obeng Paintsil, Founder and Spiritual Director of Global Rosary Network for conceiving the idea of the Rosary Congress.

Most Rev Naameh said the initiative had received the full support from the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, and was an important milestone for the Church as it prepared for the climax of the Jubilee Year.

He commended all the dioceses and guests for their commitment and participation throughout the Congress.

He said: “The Rosary Congress reminds us that the Rosary is not just a devotion. It is a path of grace, a call to conversion, transformation, and deeper faith.”

The inspiration behind the Rosary Congress was revealed during a period of prayer and reflection by Rev Father Paintsil, who felt divinely inspired during Eucharistic Adoration to initiate the event in the country.

After learning that the first Rosary Congress took place in Poland in 1979 and later in the United States, Rev Father Paintsil believed the time had come for Ghana to experience the same renewal of faith through prayer and devotion.

The event in Tamale is to be replicated in Accra from October 16 to 18, for Dioceses in the southern zone, and in Kumasi from October 30 to November 01, for Dioceses in the middle zone.
