Gold Fields Ghana’s (GFG’s) commitment to breast cancer screening for its host communities in Tarkwa Nsuaem and Prestea Huni-Valley Municipalities have yielded positive results, making a difference.
At Fiaseman Senior High School in Tarkwa, the Mine recently organised a breast screening exercise for students and staff where issues were identified in eleven individuals who underwent the screening.
The medical team, led by Dr Magdalene Bakari, Lead Specialist of Health Services GFG, told the media that they were subsequently referred for further examination, and four of them might need surgical proceedings.
According to her, “There are always success stories for GFG whenever we hold this exercise to help detect breast health issues early and save lives”.
She stated that as October marked Breast Cancer Awareness Month, GFG, had dedicated the whole month to screen their women and support them to ensure that each one survived.
The screening was usually conducted to identify health concerns at an early stage, so those having challenges could receive the required treatment on time and improve their chances of survival.
Dr Bakari entreated young ladies and women to regularly check their breast for any abnormalities and ensure they seek immediate medical attention.
“One of the things that protects our women from breast cancer, is breastfeeding, and not the suckling done by men”.
“The pleasure is necessary, but let us ensure that our women breastfeed, and we do not deny our babies the needed breast milk”. She added.
The lead Specialist advised girls to abstain from early sex, so they do not miss education because of teenage pregnancy, added that, “One thing we love about Fiaseman SHS is they support their pregnant students, and that is commendable.
“To our ladies, in the event of pregnancy, do not engage in unsafe abortions, but let us stay through, have babies and continue our education, to enable us contribute positively to the development of the nation” She cautioned.
Some students and staff who participated in the programme expressed appreciation to GFG and asked for more because of its significant impact.
