Free health screening wraps up Odwira Festival in Akropong-Akuapem

The Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo Foundation (OKWAF), in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment (MoYDE), has organised a free health screening session in Akropong-Akuapem to conclude a week-long celebration of the Odwira Festival.

This annual initiative by OKWAF aims to provide essential health services and promote the well-being of the people of Okuapemman.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Emmanuel Asa-Ntow, the Executive Director of OKWAF, emphasised the foundation’s commitment to enhancing community health.

He said unlike previous years that featured surgical missions from the United States, this year’s event focused on comprehensive health screenings.

The programme received support from the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, National Health Insurance Authority, and several Non-Governmental Organisations including Alpha Health Group and Vision Spring.

Services offered included screenings for breast cancer, oral health, prostate cancer, glucose levels, blood pressure, and blood donations.

Participants also benefited from free registration and renewal of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards.

Ms Sandra Asafo-Agyei, a representative from MoYDE, reiterated the ministry’s dedication to youth health and empowerment.

She said the Akropong-Akuapem event was MoYDE’s second health screening initiative, following a similar program in Mantse-Agbona, with plans to expand to other communities.

Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, with many highlighting the importance of accessible healthcare.

Ms Diana Afram, a middle-aged resident of Mamfe, shared her gratitude for finally receiving a breast cancer screening and NHIS registration through the programme.

The health screening session at the Odwira Festival underscored the shared commitment of OKWAF and MoYDE to improving public health in Akropong-Akuapem, leaving a lasting impact on the community and reinforcing the need for inclusive healthcare services.
