Ms. Margaret Abrafi Appiah, the Sunyani West Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has urged women to contribute to the nationwide fight against corruption.
She said corruption stifled progressive growth and economic development and advised them to endeavour to report corruption-related offences to anti-corruption agencies like the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the Police.
Ms Appiah gave the advice when speaking at a civic engagement forum organised by the NCCE for some women groups in the Municipality at Nsoatre. She stressed the need to empower women to contribute to stem corruption as well as promote the rule of law.
The NCCE in partnership with the Ministry of Finance with support from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the European Union (EU) organised the forum, aimed at sensitising the women on their roles in promoting accountability and fighting corruption.
It was attended by traders, hairdressers, seamstresses, apprentices, pensioners, queen mothers and other women leaders as well as representatives from the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) and CHRAJ.
Ms. Appiah also urged women to report all forms of domestic violence, and human rights abuses too and to deepen the culture of accountability and transparency.
Mr. Vincent Missah Akwei, an officer at the Bono Regional Office of the NCCE commended women for their roles in shaping society.
However, he expressed concern about moral decay and degeneration of social values which he added had exacerbated the fight against corruption.
Chief Inspector Lydia Ameyaw from the Bono Regional Office of the DOVVSU, also advised women to report cases of domestic violence against them and others to the unit.
After going women’s rights and their roles in holding duty bearers accountable, the participants pledged to serve as ambassadors for change and contribute their quota towards promoting the rule of law and the fight against the corruption which remained the bane of socioeconomic development.
