Dr Osei Kuffour Afreh, the Bono Regional Director of Health has expressed concern about the alarming cases of cervical cancers in the region.
He said the region recorded 93 cases in 2021, 41 cases in 2022, 16 cases in 2023 and 34 cases in 2024, and urged women mostly 24 years and above to go for regular breast screening and examination.
Speaking in an interview with the media on the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination exercise in the region, Dr Afreh said the vaccination remained the surest way to protect women and girls against cervical cancers.
He said the region had received 83,000 doses of the HPV vaccination and urged families and schools to cooperate and support the vaccination exercise.
Dr Afreh assured the public about the safety of the HPV vaccine and urged families to allow their girls between nine and 14 years to be vaccinated.
He said: “The HPV vaccine is 99 percent safe”, urging the public to maintain their trust and confidence in the Ghana Health Service and urged them not to hesitate to report any reaction to the service after taking the vaccine.
