The Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), in collaboration with the Africa Solar Industry Association (AFSIA), has announced its partnership to host the 2025 edition of the Renewable Energy Forum Africa (REFA) in Accra from December 3 to 4.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, Mr. Kwame Jantuah, Chairman of AGI’s Energy Sector, underscored the importance of renewable energy in Ghana’s economic transformation.
“AGI recognises the critical role renewable energy plays in driving Ghana’s economic growth, reducing our carbon footprint, and enhancing energy security,” he said.
He noted that AGI would leverage its extensive industrial network to promote REFA 2025, facilitate connections between investors and local businesses, and advocate for policies that support renewable energy adoption.
The event, to be held at the Mövenpick Hotel, will bring together key stakeholders from across Africa and beyond, including investors, developers, policymakers, and technology providers. It is expected to catalyse investment,
foster partnerships, and accelerate Ghana’s transition to a sustainable energy future.
John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, would officially open the 2025 edition of the Renewable Energy Forum Africa (REFA).
Ms. Magdalena Wüst, Deputy Head of Cooperation at the Swiss Embassy, reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to Ghana’s sustainable development.
She highlighted the Ghana Cooperation Programme 2025–2028, which focuses on strengthening local governance, supporting private sector growth, and enhancing environmental integrity.
Ms. Wüst also announced Switzerland’s support for the Ghana Solar Photovoltaic Net-Metering Project, in partnership with the Government of Ghana, the African Development Bank, and the Climate Investment Fund.
The initiative aims to install 12,000 solar PV systems generating 62.5 MW of green electricity, while also addressing end-of-life management of solar panels through circular economy principles.
“Ghana stands as a beacon of economic growth and progress in West Africa. Through initiatives such as the Ghana Solar Photovoltaic Net-Metering Project, Switzerland supports Ghana’s vision to generate at least 10% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030,” she said.
Mr. John van Zuylen, CEO of AFSIA, expressed excitement about hosting REFA in Ghana, describing the country as “the centre of excitement for everything solar in Africa.”
He praised the Ghanaian government’s proactive policies and international partnerships that had created a conducive environment for solar energy investments.
He noted that REFA 2025 would feature high-level presentations, project showcases, and a robust B2B matchmaking platform to connect developers, financiers, and end-users.
“We are expecting hundreds of professionals from across Africa and beyond to explore investment opportunities and advance solar projects,” he said.
Mr. van Zuylen also announced that the AFSIA Solar Awards 2025 would be held on the evening of the first day of the forum, celebrating excellence in Africa’s solar and storage industry.
Mr. Herbert Friese, General Manager of Dutch & Co., shared insights into Ghana’s solar progress, highlighting the Helios 16.8 MW rooftop project in Tema, which won the 2024 AFSIA Award for Best Commercial and Industrial Project.
He called on stakeholders to support REFA 2025 and seize the momentum to scale up renewable energy adoption.
The press conference concluded with a call for inclusive policy development, sustainable solar waste management, and greater public-private collaboration to ensure Ghana’s energy transition is both impactful and enduring.
The forum, which has previously been hosted in Cape Town and Nairobi, is recognised as Africa’s premier platform for renewable energy investment and collaboration.
REFA 2025 is supported by GET.invest, a European programme co-funded by the European Union and countries such as Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Austria.
The Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) is also a strategic partner.
Ghana’s energy sector has seen significant progress under the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, with key initiatives including a $200 million-backed solar rooftop programme targeting 137 MW capacity, electrification of 150 off-grid island communities via mini-grids and a 1,000 MW rooftop solar target for commercial and industrial use, among others.
The country has also achieved notable milestones such as Africa’s largest single solar rooftop installation (16.82
MWp) in Tema and the continent’s largest floating solar project at the Bui Dam.
