Nkoranza Municipal Directorate of Agriculture trains farmers resilient on farm practices

The Nkoranza South Municipal Directorate of Agriculture in the Bono East Region has trained more than 43,000 farmers on smart and climate resilient farm practices to empower them to mitigate climate change impacts on their farms.

The farmers, drawn from 60 communities in the municipality, were also enlightened on best farm practices to improve the quality of crop yields.

They were also educated on the benefits of planting economic trees like moringa trees, mangoes, coconuts, and cashews at the peripherals of their farms.

Mr Joseph Adu-Parko, Agriculture Extension Agents at the Techiman Municipal Directorate disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the sidelines of a field inspection visits to the farms of some of the beneficiaries.
The farmers were taken through best planting practices, triangular measurement, proper land demarcation, and the proper application of Hydrogen Gel on coconut seedlings.

Mr Adu-Parko said the directorate through the Coconut Federation of Ghana (CocoFeG) had also distributed about 83,000 hybrid coconut seedlings to more than 570 registered farmers in the Municipality.

He explained that proper application of hydrogen gel moisture sustained the growth of the coconut seedlings, particularly during the dry seasons.

Mrs Gifty Fremah Appiah, the Nkoranza South Municipal Director of Agriculture, said: “moringa is a carbon credit crop with potential to mitigate the severe impact of climate change”.

She said the directorate was making deliberate efforts to conscientise the farmers on the need for them to plant the economic trees, saying that the impact of climate change could be reduced in the next three to five years.

Throwing more lights, Mrs Appiah explained that the free distribution of the coconut seedlings aligned with the Presidential Initiatives in Agriculture and Agribusiness (PIAA).

The PIAA aimed at expanding agriculture and agribusiness, creating jobs, improving livelihoods, increasing national production levels, and improving national exports earnings.

Mrs Appiah said the CocoFeG was implementing the PIAA being funded by the Ghana Exim Bank.
