National Service personnels, serving at Gold Fields Ghana (GFG) Tarkwa Mine, have painted the Hooper Memorial Basic School Special Unit to create an inspiring learning environment.
In addition to the painting of the school building, the group presented food, household supplies, and other essentials to the Angels of Hope Orphanage Home.
A wheelchair was also provided for a young boy in the home with mobility issues to enhance his movement.
Ms. Caroline Eugenia Buabeng Clement, Vice President of the NSP’s at GFG, Tarkwa Mine, said as a way of giving back to their community, each personnel contributed GH¢200 to support the initiative.
She said they had a radio sensitisation programme to educate the public about the importance of special units, caregiving, effects, and ways to prevent associated challenges.
Ms. Clement revealed that the team visited the school to interact with the students and staff, understand their needs, and learn from their experiences.
The Vice President appealed to all NSP’s to identify a need in their respective communities and strive to address it to motivate others to do same.
Mr. Matthew Adutum, the Unit Head in charge of the Special Unit of Hooper Memorial Basic School, thanked the personnel for giving their school a fresh coat of paint.
He explained: “You don’t see children with special needs as different. They learn from the regular ones, and the regular ones learn from them, and appreciate them, so we can stay together over here.”
Mr. Adutum advised parents not to hide their children with special needs at home, stressing that education and training would make them more acceptable in society.
The Hooper Memorial Basic School Special Unit cares for children with special needs. Some face difficulties with writing, speaking, and other related issues.
The school currently has 35 students, comprising 11 girls and 24 boys.
